Mind Meets Machine: Unlocking the Power and Potential Pitfalls of AI in Mental Health!

Our lab director, Dr. Shalini Lal, was invited as a keynote speaker at the 2024 annual conference of the Canadian Psychiatric Association. On this occasion, Dr. Lal, in collaboration with Dr. John Torous (Department of Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School affiliated teaching hospital), presented "Can chatbots/large-language models see my patient? An introduction to generative AI for mental health."
They guided participants through the key differences between rule-based AI chatbots and generative ones, highlighting their risks and benefits for mental health care. They also discussed issues pertaining to the use of mainstream chatbots by young people for mental health support.
Their session received positive feedback as being both informative and engaging, with written feedback such as: “excellent presenters”, “very interesting, informative, and well-researched/organized presentation”, “very effective presentation that demonstrated the potential and risks of AI,” and interest from participants to learn more about this topic at future conferences. À cette occasion, Dre. Lal, en collaboration avec Dr. John Torous (département de psychiatrie au Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, un hôpital universitaire affilié à Harvard Medical School), ont présenté "Can chatbots/large-language models see my patient? Ils ont guidé les participants à travers les différences clés entre les chatbots d'IA basés sur des règles et ceux génératifs, en soulignant les risques et les avantages dans le contexte des soins de santé mentale.
