“The kids are not all right—and it’s time to listen"
In 2017, The Vancouver Sun published an article on #YMHTech lab director Dr. Shalini Lal and colleagues' study, “Impact of Mental Health Services on Resilience in Youth with First Episode Psychosis: A Qualitative Study”, which she conducted as part of her doctoral dissertation at the University of British Columbia.
In the article, the Sun highlights how Dr. Lal’s experience as a service provider helped shape her research. At a time when most of the research in the field was quantitative, Dr. Lal’s experience as a service provider helped her identify the need for and importance of qualitative perspectives on mental health service delivery to youth experiencing a first-episode psychosis.
The study reveals insights into what young people believe is and isn’t helpful with regards to mental health services they receive. Technology was seen as a particularly valuable tool in keeping young people connected to their peers, family, and care providers.
